Project Description

Protective Award cases members of our Employment team have acted on: Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group

Three companies operating restaurants within the Jamie Oliver restaurant group went into administration on 21st May 2019. One New Change Limited owned Barbacoa restaurant located in St. Paul’s, London, Fifteen Restaurant Limited owned Fifteen, a restaurant chain located in and around London and Jamie’s Italian Limited owned the Jamie’s Italian chain which was nationwide.

When 22 of the restaurants were closed, more than 1000 jobs were lost. Three restaurants were bought out of administration by the SSP Group.

The Restaurant group had began as a single outlet in Oxford in 2008 and had grown to 43 restaurants by the end of 2016.

It is believed that the celebrity chef had injected a large sum of his own capital into the businesses in an attempt to save them but unfortunately, without success.

SDM Legal were instructed by a large number of employees from all three companies to lodge a Protective Award claim with the Employment Tribunal.

In a successful judgment dated 20th May 2020, Central London Employment Tribunal issued a judgment to SDM Legal’s clients ruling that the companies had breached section 188 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 by failing to properly consult with the employees on their redundancies.
